Masons: Reasons for Fireworks!

By “Coach Gary” Micheloni

July and fireworks: Well, it is sort of a tradition around here, whether that be on the pages of this column, the views and ideas of the MCAA staff, or the deeply held beliefs of the men and women of the masonry industry: Independence Day is huge for all of us. The reasons may be varied, but they all tend to be related and amazingly similar!

The American Fourth of July celebration does tend to focus on the patriotism and desire for freedom boiling up in the 1770s and before. Rightly so. If not for then, the today would be completely different. We’d be talking about our royal family, and not our current concept of a republican form of government, coupled with the rights of the people. Amazingly enough, that truly American ideal has persevered for some 237 years – unprecedented in the history of this world.

Our main battle, back then, was with the British Crown. Many thought is simply to be foolish. And those naysayers were close to being correct. If not for a little luck now and then – some would say divine intervention – the uprising would have been short lived.

A saying we are familiar with is that “freedom is not free.” Our freedoms only began in 1776. The battle to preserve and guarantee them continues to this day. As I write this, people we all know personally are either deployed or serving in the military at this minute, getting ready to go (again?) or are just returning. They are people in our neighborhoods, churches and synagogues, community service clubs, recent graduates from high school and college – carrying that same torch of freedom and ensuring our liberties.

American history is filled to overflowing with accounts of the heroism and valor, which have saved and preserved this nation, along with her traditions and values. Let me share the names of just a few. Our freedoms of today can be traced directly to the battlefields at Lexington and Concord, Gettysburg, the Western Front, from the sands of Iwo Jima to the Battle of the Bulge, the Chosin Reservoir, Khe Sanh and so many others. It is almost a sin to not list more.

I’m recently reminded that some 69 years ago, the landing of Allied troops at Normandy (D-Day) occurred. An important part of this was the mission of a company of U.S. Army Rangers to take over a position currently held by a German machine gun and artillery emplacement. Their guns would be trained on the troops coming ashore, so their removal was mandatory.

Please realize that this group of about 225 Rangers was to attack these guns at a place called Pointe du Hoc. If you Google this term, you will see the enormity of the task, because the Pointe was protected by 100-foot-high, vertical cliffs, just off of a short beach. You’ve just gotta see the picture.

So, their mission was to come ashore, scale these cliffs in the face of overwhelming machine gun and rifle fire, down the cliffs and at the Rangers, as they climbed up. About 100 of the Rangers actually survived and went on to complete the mission. Over half were lost. And let’s not forget this: Every Ranger was a volunteer. Such is the heritage of our country.

Bringing this back to the present day, compare your lot in life to that of a young, Army Ranger, while he is contemplating the enormity of the task before him. Sometimes it feels like the competition is playing dirty; things are not fair; the economy sucks; your business is just hanging on by a thread; life is tough! You finish the sentence – because it’s your life.

How did those Rangers get to the top? They wanted their goal more than the enemy wanted to deny them. And that’s a big part of the secret of life, isn’t it? Plus, the Rangers had a secret weapon. They had artillery of their own. Offshore lay the U.S. Navy, which could deliver a barrage of its own. They had plenty of ammo, the best guns, and more experienced people. The Rangers had the Navy in their corner of the ring. Just had to make the call and ask for the help.

So here’s the thing. For us in the masonry industry, we’ve got our own version of the Navy. We happen to call it the MCAA. They’ve got plenty of ammo, know how to deliver it, and have the best people around to make it all happen. These days, it’s a much easier call to make than the one that the Rangers’ radio man made.

Let’s face facts: Even with the Navy’s help, the task before the Rangers was daunting and not likely to succeed. But it had to succeed. There was no Plan B. This made their accomplishment all the more remarkable. Actually, the enormity of the mission probably helped the Rangers, as the German artillery overlooked this possibility, at first, thinking it impossible, until they were completely overrun.

You have got to believe that you make it. To help you with that, remember where you came from, everything that your country has gone through, and the paths laid out by the pioneers ahead of you. Happy Independence Day, America!

Mason Contractors: Your "Dash" to Success in 2013

By “Coach Gary” Micheloni

Right about now, everyone’s all concerned with New Year’s resolutions, what next year may hold for us, what to change, and what to repeat. A wish for this and a hope for that… Consider this instead: This is how your 2013 actually looks: Jan. 1, 2013 – Dec. 31, 2013.

The year 2013 has to be your year to succeed. Everyone, including your competitors, has been given Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. The difference is the “dash” between day 1 and day 365. That difference is you. It’s all you’ve got.

Coach Gary has coaches himself. Let me tell you about Coach Kenneth, who said to me, “Gary, what are you doing with your dash, and what have you done with the dash you were given for 2012?” His questions really made me think.

Regardless of where you stand, you can expect politics to be pretty much business as usual. But the theme of my messages over the past couple of years to “hang in there” still is going to be important going forward. As an industry, and as individual contractors, hanging in there may just be the name of the game. Things likely will not get remarkably better any time soon.

As you plan your dash, what are you going to do differently this year from last year?

If you’re reading this in early-January, doesn’t it seem impossible that you are now writing the date as 2013? Where did the time go? My guess is that it went by pretty quickly – in a dash!

Life and business, even family, are a race. That new little baby is now asking for your car keys or is leaving for college, or just going out on his or her own. That new business has now been around the block a couple of times, can do more things, has more experience. How did all of that happen?

A famous old saying: If you always do what you’ve always done, then you’ll always get what you’ve always got! In other words, if 2012 wasn’t so hot (or could have been hotter), are you going to do the exact thing in the new year? Unless you are very content with things, then I hope that your answer is “No.”

I can tell you this with great certainty: The people at the MCAA have no intention of doing things the same as they did last year. They are in a growth mode, and you should position your business to work along with them. They know exactly where they are going in 2013. My suggestion is to run along with them, and let them do the hard work while you follow along in their draft.

Pope John XXIII put it this way, “Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.”

How big would your dreams be for this coming year if you knew that you couldn’t fail? Many of your competitors will not dream at all. But you are all about the dash!

Full Contact PM for Mason Contractors: The Blessings of Leasership

By “Coach Gary” Micheloni

Right now is a weird time for me, and maybe for you, as well. But as I sit here, thinking about this column, I realize that I am in some kind of a convergence of seasons. It is just three days prior to our national elections – a “season” that has been going on for the longest time. The time for Halloween has passed, and Thanksgiving is almost upon us, officially launching the onset of the holiday shopping season. Along with them, the holidays that are centered on our faith are just around the corner.

The elections leave me both hopeful and troubled. I’m not ambivalent about my choices for those seeking political office, so I know how I hope things will turn out. But I realize that things might not all go the way I would like, and my concern is how that all affects the country.

Everywhere you look, leadership is clearly on display. I have watched in amazement the resilience and resourcefulness of those whose neighborhoods have been damaged by Super Storm Sandy. People are grateful for help, no matter the direction from which it comes. Many of those who expected the federal government to ride in like the cavalry and save the day have been very disappointed; simultaneously, they have been overwhelmed by the generosity and efforts of their neighbors – even strangers – who have pitched in.

I mentioned the convergence of seasons, simultaneously living through a bunch of them that are seemingly unrelated. Yet, there still is actually a common thread: the American Experience. These seasons come from our common traditions.

About half the country will be disappointed in the elections, the other half will be ecstatic.
But here’s the thing about our country: We may have a transition of power from one administration to another, or the present administration may remain there. Either way, love it or hate it, we have all agreed to go through this as Americans, we will stand by the process, and the whole thing will happen without bloodshed.

This is an astonishing thing, seldomly seen anywhere else in our world. Jefferson was so right when he spoke of these “precious blessings.”

So many countries around the world can’t even imagine such a thing. To advocate for freedom is often a death sentence. Again, the precious things we sometimes take for granted, that we ignore by not caring enough to cast an informed vote, would astonish the majority of people in the world who can’t come to terms with the notion of being free to open a business, speak what’s on your mind, worship as you choose, have the right to own property – and to defend it. Doubt me? Talk to someone who has emigrated here from a country run by a dictator. Such people are blessings to us, and demonstrate the continuing opportunities here, right at our feet.

And through all of this long, political season, on which billions of dollars have been spent, Americans still have enough confidence to enjoy the silliness of Halloween, the somber and joyous gratitude of Thanksgiving, the real reverence of the holidays of their faith, of the reverie and promise of New Year’s Eve and Day.

Our country has been blessed, even before its beginning as a nation, because of the leadership and vision of its founders. When the country was being built, its leaders adopted the principles that established its plumb lines and boundaries. Moral, ethical and religious values were part of its fabric. In other countries, the reality was “the king is law,” but our leaders turned that on its head and demanded that “the law is king.” Real leadership!

Don’t lie awake at night, worried about what may or may not happen. Dig in. Pitch in. Go “all in” for 2013 and for your family. There is an old saying that there are three types of people: those who watch things happen, those who make things happen, and those who wonder, “What happened?”

Come Nov. 7, MCAA still will be here, with a plan in place to move our industry forward next year. We are waiting for your involvement and leadership, because a breakout year in 2013 won’t happen without you.
